DISCLAIMER: Flue And Hearth Notes™ And Urban Inspection Language® (UIL)
The Flue and Hearth Notes (FHN) and Urban Inspection Language® (UIL) are intended to provide helpful information about the interior and exterior condition of a chimney. The forms are intended to work in conjunction with Chapters 14 and 15 of the National Fire Protection Association Code book 211 (NFPA 211) (2016 edition) as these chapters re-late to Level 1 and Level II inspections. The intention of the FHN is to provide sequential information based on NFPA 211 (2016), International Residential Codes (2019) versions on recommended criteria for the proper construction of masonry chimneys, or in the case of a manufactured products to follow manufacturer’s installation instructions. Small differ-ences in individual circumstances can be very important in resolving chimney problems, and the general guidance provided by this system (FHN) cannot take such differences in-to account. Please also realize that many variables, i.e. usage, weather, fuel, etc., can change quickly and the timeliness and accuracy of the information contained in the FHN cannot be and is not guaranteed. The FHN and UIL are a guide to follow the criteria based on NFPA 211 Inspection procedure and not an attempt to be the formal inter-pretation. Please contact your building department or code officials (Authority Hav-ing Jurisdiction) for the codes they have adopted and follow. If you have a legal sit-uation, do not attempt to use only the information gathered on this re- port, as oth-er information may be needed to be gathered on site. The determination of the need for repair or services and the choice of a chimney technician are extremely important de-cisions for the homeowner and should not be based solely upon the use of these work-sheets. The information gathered, along with references from the Authority Having Juris-diction and any local codes and manufacturer’s instructions, should be referred to when commenting on a client’s chimney condition. A description or indication of limitation of practice does not mean that any agency or board has certified such chimney sweep com-pany or technician who uses the FHN as a specialist or expert in an indicated field of chimney repair. Companies using the FHN are recommended to Certify from those organ-izations that do, such as CSIA, F.I.R.E, NFI, and WETT.
